EDITORIAL NOTE

Last month, five Gujarat based firms did themselves and the State proud by winning the coveted Indian Exporters Excellence Award of Dun & Bradstreet in association with Export Credit Guarantee Corporation of India. Their activities ranged from export of peanuts to erection of transmission towers for distribution of electricity.

Of the total, three are small enterprises, one a medium scale unit and another a large scale undertaking. Their success unfolds a critical message. And it is that size is the least important factor for export success. By their achievement, the winners have demonstrated what the state entrepreneurs are capable of.

Two other reasons make the achievement very significant. First is that the achievers made their grade from out of 50,000 Award aspirants. Second, is that one out of every eight winners is a Gujarat based enterprise. Export business is no cakewalk. From procuring commodities, to producing products, to shipping consignments to customers on time involves overcoming of many challenges. The winners have shown nothing is impossible with a focused vision and unwavering commitment to deliver.

Welspun India Limited, of the Welspun group which has manufacturing units in Gujarat was also an award winner.

The rankings were based on five key parameters: Total Export Revenue, Growth of Export Revenue, Export Revenue Contribution to Total Turnover, Net Profit and Growth in Turnover. The Award was based on a self nomination process, and applications came from across the country.

One of the unique features of the award is the sub-division of the exporters in micro, small, medium and large revenue brackets in each sector, to ensure wider coverage and recognition. D&B India reached out to 50000 exporters through individual mailers followed by an intensive tele-calling exercise.
